Ki-O-Rahi

Ki-O-Rahi is a traditional Maori team sport that was made centuries ago. Ki-O-Rahi was based on the legend about Rahitutakahina and the rescue of his wife Tiarakurapakewai where they invented the game as a way to resolve disputes peacefully. Ki-O-Rahi is a sport that includes strategy ,  speed , strength , accurate ball handling skills and teamwork.

In the legend about Rahi his wife Tiara was abducted by the Patupaiarehe. The Patupaiarehe who cast a spell on the forest dragged Tiara through the forest.

So Rahi got ready for his journey to save his wife by packing up some moa eggs and food. Rahi made a manu tangata (kite) to try and travel to the forest where
Patupaiarehe were hiding Tiara.

     How to play Ki-O-Rahi
First you need a circular field. You also need 7 poles which you need to make into an inner and an outer circle. You need to make an Ara which is a line through all the circles.

There are 2 teams named Taniwha and Kioma. Taniwha has to hit Te Tupu and Kioma has to touch pou with the ball then get a try. 5 people from each team are allowed to be in the middle circle. 3 from Kioma can be defending Te Tupu in the inner circle.

If your tag gets ripped off you only have 3 seconds to pass but if 2 tags get ripped its a handover instantly. If Kioma get a try you have to restart the game over again by 1 person from Taniwha throwing it from Marama.

There are 3 version to play Ki-O-Rahi there's a tackling version a tag version and a touch version too.Ki-O Rahi is becoming more popular and more competitive. Its also a school competition.

How the leaning tower become leaning

The leaning tower of Pisa, in italy is famous because of its tilt. An inscription on the right hand corner above the entrance said that construction began in 1173. It was built as bell tower to wake up people to go to church or warn them of emergencies. It was or so built to show the  wealth and power of Pisa.

When they got to the 3rd storey the building started to sink because the subsoil was weak and the foundation was not strong or sturdy. As you go up the spiral staircase there are 300 well worn stone steps when you reach to the top you can see a panoramic view of Pisa.

At the top of the tower it should be vertical but it’s not. Now today it is almost 4m where it should be. The tilt was worsening because of the weak subsoil underneath the poorly laid foundation. So they compensated for the tilt by constructing 1 side of the tower taller than the other.

Echolocation

Echolocation is the use of ultra high beat sound for exploring and locating there prey. Bats and marine mammals are able to use noises to see. It is when a echo rebounds an animal or a object it images some parts of the environment. An echo must be loud enough and short enough so the echo can rebound of an object it sends out another high pitch. Marine mammals like dolphins , whales and some human and birds can use echolocation.

In some bats that sound are made and sent out by their noses but most send differently by their mouths. The sound rebounds off objects and prey in their surroundings for example insects , fishes , branches and humans and they are picked up by the bats sensitive ears. Even if bats have good eyesight, they depend on the echolocation system to direct them self around as well find their prey.

Bats can deflect obstacles no wider than a ribbon they can identify the size of an object.
